Common Installation Problems:
While preparing VIRL for activation some have ran into problems concerning the NTP daemon being associated with a trusted peer.
Thank you for fellow user @JasonYates for providing the below trouble-shooting steps:
Edit /etc/ntp.conf and remove the lines
Then add a new line
Restart ntp and wait a few minutes & it should activate.
If you are still having problems, please view the below discussion to help resolve the NTP configuration.
If you are still receiving high offsets and peers haven’t successfully connected, try referencing a site-specific NTP server from http://www.pool.ntp.org/join.html.
After NTP is valid you can move onto the next step to activate your VIRL license from User Workspace Management.
- Activating SALT License key
When having issues activating your VIRL license, verify that the "Salt ID and domain" have been entered correctly in the salt settings in User Workspace Management. For example, the Salt ID and domain should look like 'AB12CD35.virl.info'. In the "List of Cisco salt masters," make sure at least two fully qualified names of the
nearest servers have been added (you can find the list provided in the install instructions). The "Master sign public key" should default to "eft.pub." When entering the license key in the "Minion private RSA key" field, make sure the entire contents of the license has been entered in starting with -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY----- and ending with -----ENDRSA PRIVATE KEY-----.
If no salt masters can be reached, follow the steps in this topic:
Please refer to these topics if you have any questions about activating your SALT License key:
Once you have reset the salt settings and VIRL has successfully communicated with Cisco's salt server, the
license enables you to work off net for 7 days before you have to connect to the internet for you license to “phone home”. The below thread provides further explanation:
- Accessing User Workspace Management
If you're unable to access User Workspace Management, please verify that the service has started and should be reporting in a "listening" state by running sudo virl_health_status | grep listening; the STD service should be in a "listening" state as well. To restart the UWM and STD services, run commands sudo service virl-uwm restart and / or sudo service virl-std restart. More information on this post:
- Virl_health_status “command not found” (usually means an unsuccessful install)
Please refer to the post below to verify if your installation is successful:
Still having problems? Please follow these steps OR create a new topic with the following output:
Confirm that you can ping the salt servers, e.g
Confirm that there’s accessibility to the SaltStack TCP ports 4505 and 4506
nc -zv us-1.virl.info 4505-4506
- Provide the output of debugging commands such as:
sudo salt-call --local grains.get id
sudo salt-call -l debug test.ping
sudo salt-minion -l debug
